Gallegos Sworn in as Police Officer at A&M–Central Texas
A familiar face joined the ranks of officer for the University Police Department (UPD) at Texas A&M University–Central Texas on Thursday afternoon when Joseph Gallegos was sworn in following successful completion of training at the Central Texas Police Academy.
Gallegos, from Copperas Cove, started with the UPD at age 17 as a part-time security officer. He was soon promoted to a telecommunications officer, then, at age 21, he applied to the Police Academy to become a certified police officer.

UPD Chief Andrew Flores said they recognized the potential in Gallegos early on.
“We noticed the talent he had shown,” Flores said. “He had a talent for service, and a good attitude. A positive attitude toward serving our students, our staff and faculty.”
Flores said Gallegos embodied the Warrior spirit, reading a quote from Lokota Chief Sitting Bull (1831-1890), “A warrior is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity.”
“A warrior is someone who stands up for those who need it and Joseph embodies that,” Flores said.
After taking the oath of office, Gallegos’ badge was pinned on him by his father, then he said a few words to the crowd that had gathered for the ceremony.
“I’m here to protect you guys,” Gallegos said. “I will always be here to help no matter what. I will do whatever I can to help make your day better and improve your experience here, because when y’all leave, I want you to remember Officer Gallegos.”
