The Warrior Collaboration Initiative (WCI) connects Texas A&M University–Central Texas (A&M-Central Texas) students with authentic, real‑world research and innovation experiences that strengthen academic learning, build professional skills, and foster meaningful community engagement. Rooted in the university’s mission to empower students through innovative education and transformative experiences, this portal serves as the central hub where faculty can share collaborative project opportunities and students can discover teams that match their interests, goals, and emerging strengths.

A&M–Central Texas is uniquely positioned to expand access to high‑impact practices by integrating research, innovation, entrepreneurship, civics, service, and industry partnerships into the student experience. As described in the Division of Research and Innovation’s strategic plan, the university is “perfectly poised to develop sustainable, scalable, and inclusive support structures focused on the best practices already occurring within the university’s undergraduate programs”. This portal is one of those structures—designed to make collaborative projects visible, accessible, and welcoming to all students, regardless of academic level, GPA, or prior experience.

A New Model for Collaborative Learning

The Warrior Collaboration Initiative is built on a proven team‑based model first launched by The Texas A&M University System in 2016. Instead of traditional 1‑on‑1 mentoring, faculty lead multidisciplinary teams of students who work together on authentic projects that advance research, innovation, and community impact. As the strategic plan explains, “mentoring five undergraduates chosen for their complementary strengths can return five times the productivity for the same time investment”.

Each project team is guided by a Team Leader—a faculty member, staff member, graduate student, or experienced undergraduate—who provides structure, mentorship, and leadership. Team Leaders participate in ongoing Leader Meetings facilitated by experienced faculty directors, forming supportive communities of practice that help refine evidence‑based teaching and mentoring strategies.

This model expands access to experiential learning, strengthens student belonging, and creates transformative learning environments grounded in collaboration, trust, and authentic problem‑solving.
