Research Development

Get Started with Grant Submissions at Texas A&M University-Central Texas.

The Research Development page is your central hub for beginning the grant proposal process.
Follow the steps below to take your research idea from concept to submission:

View Process Steps:

  • Explore internal/external funding sources on our website.
  • Sign up for automated grant alerts and newsletters from agencies (NIH, NSF, DoD, private foundations, etc.).
  • Connect with your department chair or the Research Development staff (RDA) to discuss opportunities relevant to your discipline. Schedule a meeting to discuss your project idea, funding needs, and initial strategy. This is the handholding phase to guide you through the process.
  • Define your research question, objectives, significance, and expected outcomes.
  • Review eligibility requirements and sponsor guidelines.
  • Researchers are strongly encouraged to review the SRS PI Guidebook (Sponsored Research Services as a Principal Investigator) to understand their responsibilities for all aspects of their research, including compliance with university and federal policies.
  • Consult with our office to refine your idea and ensure alignment with funder priorities.
  • Review Sponsored Research Services’ (SRS) submission guidelines.
  • Complete the Notification of Intent (NOI) to Apply form. (Warrior Web login required.)
Please do this as early as possible—at least 30 days before the agency deadline.
  • Include a summary of your project, agency guidelines, and collaborators with your NOI.
  • Submitting the NOI initiates internal tracking, compliance checks, and connects you with Research Development Office (RDO) staff. This formalizes your intent to seek external funding, allows us to prepare a case file, and connects you with the appropriate support.

Warrior Web login required.

Notice of Intent (NOI) Form
  • After your NOI is reviewed and approved by our RDO staff it will be routed to SRS and other internal support staff. Researchers are asked to contact SRS pre-award staff with the intent to submit a proposal a minimum of 3 weeks prior to the sponsor deadline date.
  • SRS provides proposal development, budget preparation, compliance review, and submission support.
  • RDO offers services including proofreading, editing, graphics development, proposal outlines/templates, supplementary document guidance, compliance review, document collection coordination, and one-on-one consulting (by appointment).
  • Request SRS templates, checklists, and sample proposals as needed.
  • Collaborate with your SRS pre-award Research Administrator to develop your proposal and budget, ensuring compliance with sponsor guidelines and System policies.
  • Take advantage of RDO services (listed above).
  • Seek feedback from colleagues and mentors.
  • Submit your complete proposal for institutional and SRS review well before the sponsor’s deadline.
  • SRS will secure required approvals (department, college, university, and system).
  • SRS will submit your finalized proposal to the sponsor, then send you confirmation and guidance for post-submission, agency requests, and compliance.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions:

Begin on the Research Development page. Follow the step-by-step guide, check our Funding Opportunity Database, and contact our office for advising.

How do I find funding opportunities relevant to my research?

Explore curated lists on our website, sign up for funding alerts and newsletters, or schedule an appointment with Research Development staff for personalized searches.

Can the Research Development office help me find funding sources?

Yes! We can help identify funding agencies and opportunities suited to your research interests.

Pre-Submission Process:

The NOI informs the university of your intention to submit a proposal. It begins internal review, ensures compliance, and connects you to support services. Submit the NOI at least 30 days before the sponsor deadline.

Include your project title/summary, sponsor guidelines or link, collaborators, and any special requirements.

Proposal Preparation:

Sponsored Research Services (SRS) and the System Research Development Office (RDO) provide proposal, budget, and compliance support. Our office can help coordinate these services.

We offer templates, example proposals, editing/proofreading, graphics support, and grant writing consultations.

Approvals and Submission:

Proposals must be reviewed and approved at departmental, college, university, and system levels. SRS facilitates this process.

SRS submits all external grant proposals to sponsors on behalf of the university.

After Submission:

You will receive confirmation. If the sponsor requests additional information or modification, SRS and your office will coordinate responses. If awarded, SRS will help manage the grant and compliance.

SRS and Research Development assist with post-award compliance, reporting, budget amendments, and more.

Miscellaneous:

Yes, but notify us as early as possible and complete an NOI for each proposal.
