Institutional Review Board
All university related research is subject to review for approval to ensure it meets with university and Texas A&M University System requirements. The Institutional Review Board
Completed applications for IRB approval are submitted to the Chair of the IRB.
The Institutional Review Board of Texas A&M University – Central Texas is charged with overseeing all research conducted by the University to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects and support the institution’s research mission. All research using human subjects — even paper-pencil questionnaires and surveys to collect data inside TAMUCT — must be approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Texas A&M University – Central Texas could suffer serious sanctions, including withdrawal of all federal funding, if the appropriate committee approval is not obtained before research begins. TAMUCT’s IRB is registered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Submit a Project
To submit a new project for approval, please follow these steps:
- Complete the IRB Protocol dynamic form found on the Forms webpage (see menu on the left side of this page). Once all researchers have completed and digitally signed the protocol form, it will automatically go to the IRB Chair for review; if you have any questions about the form, email the IRB Chair for assistance at [email protected]
- Make sure to attach copies of any consent forms, information sheets, surveys, and other relevant documents to the dynamic form. Also include a copy of the certificate for completed CITI training for each investigator on the project; as noted at the top of the Forms webpage, only those with documented training in the ethics of human subjects research will be permitted as study staff for an IRB-approved research project. For info on getting the required CITI training, go to the Division of Research Canvas page and click the relevant link for “Accessing CITI training”.
- Protocols judged to be Exempt or Expedited will probably not need to be considered at a Full Board meeting and will be evaluated as quickly as possible. Make sure the IRB New Protocol dynamic form is completed fully for the most efficient review.
- To assure consideration at the next IRB meeting, the dynamic from submission MUST be completed at least 5 business days prior to that meeting (see list of upcoming IRB meeting dates above on this webpage). Materials submitted later than that will be reviewed at the discretion of the IRB Chair. Allow for up to 2-4 weeks for the IRB to process your application, although most reviews are completed in a much shorter time.
