Charles "Chuck" Simmons is a 79-year young student finally completing the undergraduate degree he started more than five decades ago.
In the 1970s, as a Houston police officer and a devoted family man, Chuck's academic journey at Sam Houston State University was challenging, involving a strenuous three-hour drive from Houston to Huntsville three times a week. Despite these hurdles, his love for learning never waned, but circumstances led him to pause his educational pursuits. This May, Chuck will walk the stage at The Cadence Bank Center at the A&M-Central Texas Spring 2024 May Commencement, receiving his degree in criminal justice, making him the University's oldest graduate. #15StoriesOfImpact

With aspirations to start his own landscaping and horticulture business upon release and a desire to mentor troubled youth, Henderson prepares for a future beyond bars with the unwavering support of his wife, Mary, and dedicated educators like Dr. Fulmore and Mr. Moore.
