Presentation: Wetlands–particularly swamps–have long served as submerged crossroads for human communities, migratory waterfowl, and wildlife. The contested, evolving meanings and beliefs about these landscapes led Americans to demand their drainage and settlement, transforming a formerly wet continent into a dry agricultural colossus.
