By Demetra Paizanis

Brandon Griggs, assistant commissioner at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and former dean of students at Texas A&M University–Central Texas, was awarded the James E. Caswell Distinguished Service Award at the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrations’ annual conference this week. Founded in 1925, TACUSPA is a statewide association of administrators, faculty, staff and students.
The Caswell Award, TACUSPA’s highest honor, recognizes student affairs professionals with at least 10 years of membership and peer-judged leadership at the state, regional or national level. Created in 1979, it is named after James E. Caswell, a Texas Christian University administrator remembered for mentoring higher education leaders and helping establish student development as a profession.
Griggs, who still serves as an adjunct professor at A&M–Central Texas, earned a doctorate in higher education administration from Azusa Pacific University, a master’s degree in student affairs administration at Baylor University, and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural services and development and communications from Tarleton State University. He began his career in student affairs at A&M–Central Texas in 2009, advancing to assistant vice president and dean of student affairs.
With more than 20 years in higher education, he now directs policy on advising college readiness and student support for Texas public colleges and universities. With the Caswell Award, he joins a small circle of leaders recognized for shaping student affairs across the state.
