How Do I Qualify?

To be eligible, you must:

  1. Be active duty, National Guard (state or federal), or a member of any branch of the military reserves
  2. File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete verification process if selected
  3. Complete residency evaluation process with Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate School. To be eligible for the Military Advantage Grant, you must be a Texas resident or eligible for a non-resident tuition waiver
  4. Meet the university’s Satisfactory Academic Progress
  5. Be degree-seeking and enrolled in courses applicable to degree

Note: Otherwise eligible individuals are not required to receive tuition assistance (full or partial) to benefit from the program. However, all calculations to determine Military Advantage benefits are based as if the maximum amount of tuition assistance was authorized for a courses or courses.

The percentage of tuition/fees covered by military tuition assistance for active state guard may vary and will be calculated to determine eligibility for the Military Advantage Grant. If active state guard military tuition assistance alone or combined with any other benefit (Including benefits that are paid to students directly such as Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve, Survivor’s and Dependents’ Education Assistance, and the Reserve Educational Assistance Program ) which covers all mandatory tuition/fees, the Military Advantage Grant will not be awarded.

How Do I Apply?

Submit your request for tuition assistance through the respective branch portal or be approved through a special program, such as Advanced Civil Schooling.

For qualifying students not using tuition assistance, submit documentation verifying your military status to the Military and Veteran Services Center.

Example 3: No Tuition Assistance

Ronald has exhausted (or chose not to request) tuition assistance, but is registered for two courses. His bill is $2000. Ronald verifies his military status with the university and receives no other non-loan financial assistance based on FAFSA. Since maximum tuition assistance would have been $1500 ($750/course), Ronald will receive $500 from Military Advantage, but will be responsible for the $1500 remaining balance.
