Curriculum

Curriculum – Overview

The specific education you receive in Army ROTC will develop you as a leader through classroom instruction, leadership labs, and summer training. These education opportunities are available not only on-campus but worldwide and allow you to maintain a normal academic schedule like all college students.

In the classroom, you are required to take one Military Science course per semester commensurate with your academic standing (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior). You will also take a Leadership Lab every semester and participate in physical training. All in all, your total investment in time to ROTC is 7 to 8 hours a week with classroom, lab, and physical training.

In the summer, there are multiple educational opportunities not only in the United States but worldwide. One of the mandatory events that you must attend will be Advanced Camp. This course is attended during the summer between your junior and senior year of college. It takes 4 weeks to complete and is conducted at Fort Knox, KY. This is the only summer event that is required for you to complete in order to commission as an Army officer.

As cadre, we understand the importance of your participation in all aspects of University life. Therefore, we are very flexible in accommodating our Cadets abilities to participate. Among the current cadets in ROTC we have students who are in Student Government, Varsity Sports, Fraternity and Sorority leadership, and other student organizations.

At the end of this education process, you will have completed the degree plan of your choice and will have earned your appointment as a 2nd Lieutenant into the active duty Army, National Guard, or Army Reserves.

Army ROTC is the world’s premier leadership development program. The skills you develop in ROTC and in your future Army career will benefit you in every aspect of life. Our vision is to produce leaders who provide character forged leadership to the nation, local communities, families and the profession of arms.

MS I and II

As a MSI or MSII Cadet, you are not required to be contracted to participate in the program, even though the option exists for MSII cadets. We actually encourage you to participate in the program until you are a MSIII before signing a contract. Contrary to the misconception that ROTC is an easy way to earn your commission, cadets realize it is not true the very first day they participate in our program; here we will challenge you both physically and mentally through rigorous trainings. Arrive a student leave a leader.

Requirement for MS I & MS II Cadets

  • PT once a week, however cadets are encouraged to attend all sessions.
  • Cadets are expected to attend class in the Army Combat Uniform (ACU).
  • LAB on Wednesday, here you engage in different combat training (STX) developing your leadership skills (uniform is ACU)

MS III

Now you are ready to start taking advanced courses during your last two years in college as elective courses. It normally includes one elective class or lab each semester, plus a summer leadership camp. You will learn advanced military tactics and gain experience in team organization, planning and decision-making. To benefit from the leadership training in the Advanced Course, all cadets must have completed either the Basic Course or have attended Basic Camp. Entering the Advanced Course requires a commitment to serve as an Officer in the U.S. Army after you graduate.

Advanced Camp

The ROTC Advanced Camp is the most important training event for an Army ROTC cadet. This course is attended during the summer between your Junior and Senior year of college. It takes 4 weeks to complete and is conducted at Fort Knox, KY. This is the only summer event that is required to complete in order to commission as an Army officer.

The 28-day training event incorporates a wide range of subjects designed to develop and evaluate leadership ability. The challenges are rigorous and demanding, both mentally and physically. Advanced Camp tests intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and stamina. These challenges provide a new perspective on an individual’s ability to perform exacting tasks and to make difficult decisions in demanding situations.

Advanced Camp places each cadet in a variety of leadership positions, many of which simulate stressful combat situations. In each position, cadets will receive evaluations from platoon Observer Trainer Mentor (OTM) officers and noncommissioned officers. In addition to proving their leadership ability, cadets must meet established standards in physical fitness, weapons training, communication, combat patrols and demonstrate their proficiency in many other military skills. Cadets must excel at Advanced Camp to be considered competitive for a commission as an Army officer.
