Texas A&M University–Central Texas Welcomes Two New College of Arts and Sciences Faculty

Texas A&M University–Central Texas has welcomed two new professors with international experience to the College of Arts and Sciences this fall.

Gabriel Araújo

Gabriel Araújo, a Brazilian-born composer and sound engineer, has joined the Department of Humanities as an assistant professor of music. Araújo earned a bachelor’s degree in composition from the Federal University of Goiás in Brazil, followed by graduate studies in France at the Conservatoire National Musique et Danse de Lyon and the Conservatoire Paris 13ème Maurice Ravel. He completed his doctorate in composition at the University of Texas at Austin in 2025.

His works have been performed at international festivals including the International Computer Music Conference in Seoul, the MA/IN Festival in Rome, Ars Electronica Forum Wallis in Switzerland and the Biennial of Contemporary Brazilian Music in Rio de Janeiro. He has twice received the FUNARTE Prize for Contemporary Brazilian Music, awarded by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture, and was a finalist for international composition prizes, including the MA/IN Awards in Italy and the Prix CIME/ICEM.

He also taught courses in digital sound, electronic media, and intermedia electronic composition between 2021 and 2025 as an assistant instructor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Vitor S. Gonçalves

Vitor S. Gonçalves has joined the Department of Social Sciences as assistant professor of criminal justice. Gonçalves earned a doctorate in criminal justice and criminology from Texas State University in 2024 and is completing a postdoctoral research appointment at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

His research, exploring topics such as racial disparities in pretrial detention, the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on street and cybercrimes, and domestic violence reporting during the pandemic, has been published in journals including Critical Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice and Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

Additionally, Gonçalves has studied juvenile justice systems in Brazil, with articles appearing in Estudios Sociológicos and Dilemas: Journal of Studies of Conflict and Social Control. His professional background includes work as a public policy and government administration specialist with the Civil Police of Minas Gerais from 2016 to 2020 and later as a consultant to the Brazilian Supreme Court on a 2021 manual to improve youth detention center management.
