Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth FlagJuneteenth is an annual celebration in the African American community that reflects upon the end of slavery due to President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation and Union General, Gordon Granger delivering the news to the slave holding states. This news was delayed two and a half years for the state of Texas and notification of freedom to enslaved people was finally announced in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, and has subsequently been recognized and celebrated as Juneteenth. Descendants of enslaved people celebrate the joy their ancestors demonstrated and the freedom they enjoy through cultural events to commemorate Juneteenth. President Joe Biden signed the legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021. A&M Central Texas News
