Stephanie Peebles Tavera is an Assistant Professor of English. She holds a PhD in English and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her current research and scholarship focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature, women’s and gender studies, disability studies, and medical humanities. She also has additional competencies and publications in the fields of environmental studies and utopian studies. Her current book project argues that women writers employed the genre of medical fiction as a form of sex education during a period of censorship under Comstock Law circa 1874-1916. Students should expect significant class discussion and community-building activities in classes with Dr. Tavera, as she believes that experiential engagement with texts and readers of texts is foundational for the study of human behavior and personal development.
