Stephanie Peebles Tavera  is an Assistant Professor of English and Bill Yowell Junior Faculty Fellow. She holds a PhD in English and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her current research and scholarship focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature, women’s and gender studies, disability studies, and medical humanities. She also has additional competencies and publications in the fields of environmental studies and utopian studies. Dr. Tavera is the author of (P)rescription Narratives: Feminist Medical Fiction and the Failure of American Censorship (Edinburgh University Press, 2022), a groundbreaking study of American women writers who employed the genre of medical fiction to correct scientific misinformation and offer methods of healing from the trauma caused by sexist medicine and selective censorship practices under Comstock law. Students should expect significant class discussion and community-building activities in classes with Dr. Tavera, as she believes that experiential engagement with texts and readers of texts is foundational for the study of human behavior and personal development.
